The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, beating out Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama pushed hard for Chicago to host the U.S.’s first Summer games since Atlanta in 1996 but it wasn’t meant to be. In the end, Chicago was eliminated in the first round, followed by Toyko. With Rio, the Olympic movement has chosen the first Olympic games ever to be held in South America, and just the third in the Southern Hemisphere.
London plays host in 2012.
