“Great Show” No More

in Last Season

nightEarlier this season we concluded that Penn State’s “White House” themes should be discontinued or at least highly limited to truly “event” games at Beaver Stadium.   Today, we are recommending that the University’s “Great Show” theme at Beaver Stadium  be given last rites.

First, let me say that there is no where else I’d rather be on a Saturday afternoon in the fall then at Beaver Stadium.  The University staff that pumps the music and video to Beaver Stadium from the basement of Bryce Jordan do a terrific job.  In fact, the pre-game theatrics of the past few years has been exceeding my expectations and those of many others.

Unfortunately, it seems that like Joe Paterno when he fails to make second half adjustments,  the music and theme people do the same thing.    Without any regard to what is actually happening on the field,  the music continues to be played, the artificial graphics continue to be shown and little plays that mean nothing are over-exemplified by those same music and graphic combinations.    Meaning, when you are down 24-7, there is absolutely no need to try to pump up the crowd that has already made its way to the exits.

I am not saying that pump-us-up theatrics shouldn’t be continued, but rather they should pushed up or down depending on what is happening on the field.
